Re: how
Sun, March 21, 2004 - 9:36 PMwell I do not think you need to go to school. I would just call around to a place that does it and get an informational interview. I am sure that any cool place would let you in to learn how. They also have a plethora of info about it on the web, and they sell kits etc..
Anyone else have advice?? I have actually thought about trying to learn myself. It would be cool to take a trip to go see that..if one could only find a cool place that would let us in.. -

Re: how
Mon, March 22, 2004 - 12:50 AMIf you are reall serious, you should set aside a place in your basement.. And get REALLY WEIRD about it! Lots of formaldihyde missing pets and a good set of needles, and a refusal to take the laws of nature or the concern of your peers seriously.
Or try the library.

Re: how
Mon, March 22, 2004 - 8:56 AMLearning taxidermy isn't very hard, doing it well is. There are many places to learn taxidermy - depending on where you are in the country. Alot of states have taxidermy associations which have demos at their conventions (California's was 2 weeks ago) Some places have classes at the local community college, you might find a local taxidermist who will teach you. You also might try your local natural history museum. Also Wasco Taxidermy supply sells instructional booklets and videos (www.taxidermy.com). I'll be teaching a mouse mounting class at Paxton Gate in May if you are interested.

Re: how
Mon, March 22, 2004 - 6:16 PMI would have to agree with Kimric on this one- learn how and get all the wierd stuff- formaldehyde, baloons etc laying around the corner of the basement..or build a shack in the backyard..and maybe contemplate moving to rural Louisiana off of hwy 49 and open a museum....
if you are gonna do it- go all out.
Remember Wally Glenn's post early on about that warehouse in Seattle where he went to go got propane?? yeah..that is what I am talking about!

Re: how
Wed, March 24, 2004 - 9:56 AMsadly, you don't use formaldehyde in taxidermy, you do use it in pickled things in jars. my dream is to have a big house in some nice quiet suburb, and keep popcisles and ice cream in my big freezer for the neighborhood kids. so when i offer them goodies, they see hoofs and horns sticking near the ice cream treats. that hasn't happened yet, but i do have some nice pickeled goodies in my medicine cabinet. -
