I have several mummies that have been found mostly in attics and garages in Okalhoma. Birds. A squirrel. Some cats and rats. I've started making some art with them and now I'm wondering how to make mummies out of deceased animals I may happen to find in my travels. A friend at work suggested a food dehydrater which I think would probably work but I thought I should ask you guys even though I suppose it's not really taxidermy. If it makes you feel any better my auto mechanic gave me a killer recipie for a lemon cake. Help me with these mummies and I'll bake you one.

i have used silica gel for drying small things like insects, lizards, bats, and birds. i bury them in it inside a jar, and check on them from time to time. one bird had to stay in for a couple of months. silica gel is used to dry flowers, and is the packets that they stick in new shoes to keep them fresh...

Not a bad idea. Thanks. Does the gel keep working forever or does it eventually soak up all it's going to?

that's a good question....i've never changed the silica out while drying the bodies. but next time, i'll give it a try and see if the results are any better.

silica gel will fill up, but it can be heated to get the water to evaporate.

I've used in the past, although not on animals, silica gel that has an indicator built in. It starts out blue and as it absorbs water it gradually turns pink...or is it pink to blue? I don't remember, but I do remember that the silica gel itself tells you what it's doing moisture wise.

I seem to recall in flower drying kits it stated that you could dry out the silica in the microwave. It's been a good ten years since I researched that so I'd check any specifics.

I have done some small thing with sand and borax.

last thing I read about drying it was to put it in a 240 degree oven for 3 hours...not sure about the microwave option.

there is a product "damp-rid", "CLosi-dry" or some such used to keep your closet dry. It comes in a pint tub and when it is damp you put the stuff on a cookie sheet and toast it, and it is good as new. I have used it to dry small animals and bugs. also a jar with a fingernail polish remover soaked rag as a fumigator will kill bus in road kill / found mummies (i had a mummy humming bird that was suddenly eaten, out of the blue. I guess the bug eggs hatched) and make dry bugs able to be positioned.
